Its destructive power is such that when it misses its target and strikes the wall of a building, the stones are momentarily turned white-hot. The spell's name is invoked by Anton himself in the moment of recognition: he identifies it as "Shahab's Lash" and realizes that if it had caught him, there would not have been "even a handful of dust left" of him.

The spell is first and only deployed in the immediate aftermath of the murder of a Dark Magician in the Maharajah restaurant. Anton, having been discovered standing over the body, flees the restaurant in Olga's body after punching Zabulon in the stomach and sweeping his legs from under him. As Anton runs down Pokrovka Street toward Zemlyanoi Val Street, Zabulon recharges his battle staff and fires Shahab's Lash. The spell travels as a streak of crimson flame that coils and twists as it passes Anton, but its inertia carries it past him before it can stop and turn back. The charge crashes into the wall of a building, momentarily turning the stones white-hot. Anton notes that Zabulon is moving very slowly as he recharges, as if something is hindering him or slowing him down.

Earlier in the evening, Zabulon had been content to observe and manipulate events, but the moment Anton escapes the restaurant, the Dark Magician escalates to lethal force. This contradicts the earlier assumption by Boris Ignatievich that the Day Watch wanted access to Anton's memories; instead, they want him eliminated entirely.
